2010 Chilean Earthquake, Actual vs Designed Response of two New Chimney Design Chimneys

CICIND Niagara-on-the- Lake / October 2010 – Michael Angelides, Managing Director of AMTE Consulting Engineers, Greece

Abstract

In 2008 two reinforced New Chimney Design chimneys were designed by AMTE Consulting Engineers for the Chilean Thermal Power Plants Colbun and Bocamina. They were constructed in 2009. The layout of the chimneys were based on Hadek’s New Chimney Design, which essentially eliminates the free space between the liner and the windshield. This is achieved by lining the concrete inner surface directly with the PennguardTM Block Lining System. In February 2010 an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck the region. This paper analyses the behaviour of these chimneys and compares the designed response to the actual response.
